Is Linux ready?
A far better question: are businesses ready for Linux? People are used to Windows, but does that mean it is better? An operating system is not the applications. When people think of "Windows", they, more often than not, are actually thinking of the applications, like Microsoft Word (which is unquestionably a pretty good application), and Excell, which also is a very worthy application. ... but those applications are not the operating system. When you need to judge how good an operating system, there is one very good indicator:
Other good indicators of its quality:
Then there is the question of how easy it is to use, and whether good applications are available. Linux is now very simple to install, take for example the Ubuntu CD. It installs just as easily as Winodws. Linux now has very good business applications, for example Open Office - a competitor Microsoft Works. These two compare mainly now only on subjective opinions. Its a matter of what you are used to. Linux also did not have good support for the wide range of devices that Windows had support for, but that is hardly the case any more. Then, there is the matter of purchase price, and maintenance costs. Linux is just the cost of a CD, which you can download over the internet. Linux does not need re-installing every few months, it does not get viruses, and you don't need to upgrade your hardware to be able to run it. You can use older hardware with less memory and CPU power, because Linux is very efficient. ... and there are guys like myself who are available to help you out if you need it. I can advise you on how best to set up your PCs with Linux, and to set up any specialised database application you need for your business. Next...
